The Ulster Grammar Schools’ Swimming Championships took place on Saturday at Ballymena and the CGS team put in some excellent performances in both the
team and individual events. In the junior events, the Year 8 swimmers and showed great promise for the future as they competed against girls up to
two years older and set personal best times in the process. The same goes for the Yr8 & 9 boys who competed in the junior category. The promising
Year 8 boys quartet gained valuable experience, set some personal best times and will certainly be in contention for medals when they return to this
competition next year. Two of our Year 9 boys performed very well in the 50m breaststroke event and were unlucky to miss out on a place in the final.
The Yr10 girls also swam very well in a very competitive age group. One of them qualified for both the 50m freestyle and backstroke finals and swam
very well to finish in 4th place in these events.
In the afternoon, it was the turn of the intermediate age group and CGS came away with a large haul of medals and silverware. The girls relay team proved
too strong for the opposition as they took gold medals in both the 200m medley and freestyle team events. One of them went on to pick up gold and silver
in the individual 50m breaststroke and 100m IM, while another also picked up a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly final. Another girl also swam very
well to qualify for the backstroke and butterfly finals and the intermediate team took the trophy for the best overall team in Ulster.
The intermediate boys team also performed extremely well in their competition. The relay team took bronze medals in both the 200m medley and freestyle
events. One of the team went on to take silver in the individual 100m IM and finished a creditable 5th place in the 50m backstroke final. A different
swimmer gained a silver medal in the individual backstroke final and was just pipped into 4th place in the freestyle final.
In the senior age group one of our Y13 pupils swam excellently in his individual events to qualify for the finals of both the 50m butterfly and freestyle
events. He set a new personal best time in the 50m butterfly and was unlucky to finish just outside the medal positions in 4th place.
